Mwalimu Nyerere's Efforts in Promoting Rural Development and the Current Situation of Rural and Urban Development in Tanzania

Abstract

The development of any country depends more on the foundation and philosophies that will prevail in that country's future. The fruits of what we are enjoying today are the results of seeds planted more than sixty years back by visionary philosophies of Mwalimu J. K Nyerere. During the leadership of Mwalimu J. K Nyerere, the foundation was laid in different angles of development. Through a literature review, this study revealed the strong and futuristic efforts of Mwalimu J. K Nyerere has contributed much to promoting rural and community development in Tanzania. It has been revealed that the philosophy of self-reliance is still working and has fastened the community development process in Tanzania. Despite the challenges, the findings show that Tanzania has taken steps forward in many development areas such as education, health, transportation, tourism, agriculture, mining, and industrial development. Based on these results, it has been concluded that Nyerere's efforts in promoting rural development have contributed much to the current development success in rural and urban areas in Tanzania. It is recommended that young generations be highly equipped with knowledge, skills, and experiences inherited from Mwalimu Nyerere's philosophies for sustainable development in Tanzania.
