<title>Trends in the Development of Patriotism in Tanzania, 1960s to 2020s</title>
<link>http://41.59.91.195:9090/handle/123456789/297</link>
<description>Trends in the Development of Patriotism in Tanzania, 1960s to 2020s
Halii, Beatrice; Kavishe, Angela
This study examined the trend of patriotism and nationalist sentiments in post&#13;
colonial Tanzania. It also explored the circumstances behind the changes and &#13;
continuities in patriotism and nationalism values during the period under review. In &#13;
Tanzania, patriotism and nationalism were cultivated during the struggle for &#13;
independence. The hardships of colonial rule and the complexities of the journey to &#13;
autonomy heightened sentiments related to love for patriotism in Tanzania and &#13;
across Africa in the 1950s. The study employed a qualitative research &#13;
methodology, drawing insights from in-depth interviews with selected &#13;
academicians and former public leaders in Dar es Salaam. The documents &#13;
reviewed helped reconstruct the fluctuations of the patriotic spirit, highlighting the &#13;
socio-political and economic contexts behind these shifts. The collected data were &#13;
analysed using content and thematic frameworks typical of qualitative analysis. &#13;
The findings suggest that the rise of nationalist movements marked the peak of &#13;
patriotic fervour in Tanzania and across Africa. Africans in Tanzania and elsewhere &#13;
sacrificed their lives, employment, families, and nations to free their continent from &#13;
imperialistic powers. In Tanzania, patriotism was further strengthened when early &#13;
leaders, under Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, promoted national values rooted in the &#13;
philosophy of Ujamaa and self-reliance. This spread patriotic values nationwide and &#13;
played a significant role in nation-building efforts. However, patriotic and &#13;
nationalist sentiments and awareness gradually declined in Tanzania, especially &#13;
after the 1990s, as individual interests grew stronger and liberal forces challenged &#13;
the relevance of patriotism and nationalism against universal values and the &#13;
pressures of global citizenship. The study recommends a strategy tailored to &#13;
current advances in science and technology to revive the deteriorating love, &#13;
loyalty, and pride in our country for current and future generations. Patriotic and &#13;
nationalist values must be nurtured and instilled among young people to ensure &#13;
Tanzania remains a politically, socially, and economically strong nation.

<title>Impact of Migrants' Cash Remittances Toward Agricultural Enhancement: Perspective from Small Scale Farmers in Mvomero District, Tanzania</title>
<link>http://41.59.91.195:9090/handle/123456789/243</link>
<description>Impact of Migrants' Cash Remittances Toward Agricultural Enhancement: Perspective from Small Scale Farmers in Mvomero District, Tanzania
Kitali, Luzabeth J.
This study aimed to examine the influence of migrants’ remittances on &#13;
agriculture improvement in rural areas in Mvomero District. It was guided by two &#13;
objectives. The first sought to examine the contribution of cash remittances in &#13;
agriculture. A sample size of 124 individuals was recruited to participate in this &#13;
study. Among those, 97 household heads were randomly selected as the sample &#13;
size using Nassiuma (2000) sample size formulae, while nine key informants and &#13;
18 participants for three focus group discussions were purposefully selected from &#13;
the selected villages. Descriptive and thematic data analysis techniques were &#13;
employed. The information was captured using questionnaires, interviews, and &#13;
focus group discussions and analyzed using SPSS for quantitative data using &#13;
Quantile analysis, chi-square test, and content analysis for qualitative data. The &#13;
study found that cash remittances were the dominant form of remittance &#13;
received by the Mvomero households from the rural-urban migrants, as asserted &#13;
by 61.7% of the respondents. The study also found that the remittances received &#13;
were used in various ways that improved agricultural productivity. They were &#13;
more used for post-harvesting activities (81.3%), paying casual labour and &#13;
renting tractors for cultivation (63.0), purchasing fertilizer and herbicides &#13;
(81.6%), land holding or renting (61.7%), as well as purchasing seeds (53.7%) &#13;
which in the end boosted the households' income. The study concludes that even &#13;
though rural-to-urban migration was viewed as a threat to agricultural &#13;
production in rural areas, it was replaced by the remittances sent by the &#13;
migrants.

<title>Spatial and temporal changes in land use/land cover and their driving forces in Kahe Forest, Northern Tanzania</title>
<link>http://41.59.91.195:9090/handle/123456789/171</link>
<description>Spatial and temporal changes in land use/land cover and their driving forces in Kahe Forest, Northern Tanzania
Kitali, Luzabeth
Deforestation is one of the major changes in terrestrial landscapes that affect the &#13;
environment. It is caused by anthropogenic activities and a myriad of natural &#13;
factors which cause a global loss of natural biodiversity and alteration of ecological &#13;
processes and services across different ecosystems. An analysis of the spatial &#13;
temporal changes in land use and land cover was done in Kahe Forest. Moderate &#13;
resolution land satellite images were downloaded from the United States &#13;
Geological Survey (USGS) archives and analyzed using the random forest (RF) &#13;
algorithm and mapped in ArcGIS 10 software to ascertain the changes that took &#13;
place in land use and land cover in Kahe Forest from 1998 to 2018. A &#13;
questionnaire and key informant interviews were used to collect data. Findings &#13;
show that, agricultural land and grassland increased by 7% and 14%while the &#13;
forest area decreased from 85% to 51%due in the same period caused by &#13;
escalation of human activities. The underlying causes of the changes include rapid &#13;
population growth, wild fires, climate change and variability as well as human &#13;
activities. It is recommended that adoption of sustainable forest-management &#13;
strategies such as enforcement of the existing conservation laws and regulations &#13;
and of alternative environment-friendly sources of livelihoods mainly community &#13;
based forest management should be enhanced all stakeholders including the &#13;
government and the community.

<title>Supermarket proliferation and their contribution on urban farming and food security in Tanzania</title>
<link>http://41.59.91.195:9090/handle/123456789/160</link>
<description>Supermarket proliferation and their contribution on urban farming and food security in Tanzania
Malekela, Asnath; Zella, Adili; Kitali, Luzabeth
Supermarkets are spreading very rapidly in developing countries, a phenomenon &#13;
that begun mainly in the past decade. The diffusion rates in developing countries &#13;
have varied over regions, characterized by three waves. Tanzania experienced the &#13;
emergence of supermarkets in the third wave in the late 1990’s to mid 2000’s. &#13;
Supermarkets dominate in urban areas where there is high population. This study &#13;
investigates the impact of supermarket expansion on urban farming and food &#13;
security in urban areas. The study was conducted in Dar es Salaam city. A total of &#13;
201 urban farmers were selected and 7 supermarket managers/representatives &#13;
were interviewed. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20 &#13;
was used to analyze the data. The findings revealed that the mushrooming of &#13;
supermarkets in the city have contributed positively to food security as large &#13;
amounts of food stuffs were stocked in the surveyed supermarkets. The stocked &#13;
food stuffs were sourced from outside the country and some were sourced from &#13;
urban farmers especially eggs and vegetables and thus providing market to the &#13;
urban farmers. The study also revealed that most of urban farmers had little &#13;
access to the supermarkets as their produce did not meet the criteria demanded in &#13;
the supermarkets in terms of quantity and quality. The study recommends that the &#13;
government of Tanzania should strengthen the laws with regard to inclusion of &#13;
locally produced food products in the supermarkets so as to enhance market &#13;
availability to the Tanzania’s farmers.
