<description>Mwalimu Nyerere's Efforts in Promoting Rural Development and the Current Situation of Rural and Urban Development in Tanzania
Matinda, Herry Zacharia
The development of any country depends more on the foundation and &#13;
philosophies that will prevail in that country's future. The fruits of what we are &#13;
enjoying today are the results of seeds planted more than sixty years back by &#13;
visionary philosophies of Mwalimu J. K Nyerere. During the leadership of &#13;
Mwalimu J. K Nyerere, the foundation was laid in different angles of &#13;
development. Through a literature review, this study revealed the strong and &#13;
futuristic efforts of Mwalimu J. K Nyerere has contributed much to promoting &#13;
rural and community development in Tanzania. It has been revealed that the &#13;
philosophy of self-reliance is still working and has fastened the community &#13;
development process in Tanzania. Despite the challenges, the findings show &#13;
that Tanzania has taken steps forward in many development areas such as &#13;
education, health, transportation, tourism, agriculture, mining, and industrial &#13;
development.  Based on these results, it has been concluded that Nyerere's &#13;
efforts in promoting rural development have contributed much to the current &#13;
development success in rural and urban areas in Tanzania. It is recommended &#13;
that young generations be highly equipped with knowledge, skills, and &#13;
experiences inherited from Mwalimu Nyerere's philosophies for sustainable &#13;
development in Tanzania.

<description>Assessment of Socio-Economic Differences and Health-seeking Behaviour among Locals in Coastal Communities of Tanzania: A Case of Dunda Ward in Bagamoyo District
Mbwete, Rose; Kitali, Luzabeth J.
This study intends to assess the socioeconomic differences concerning health seeking behaviour among locals in coastal communities of Tanzania. Specifically, &#13;
the study intends to assess the variations in terms of socioeconomic differences &#13;
among locals in coastal communities and their relationship with health-seeking &#13;
behaviour and established factors influencing health-seeking behaviour among &#13;
locals in coastal communities. The study used both quantitative and qualitative &#13;
research methods. Questionnaires were used for data collection; in-depth &#13;
interviews were conducted with key informants, and four focus group discussions &#13;
were conducted within the study area. In all, 200 respondents comprising 64 &#13;
males and 134 females were interviewed, while in-depth interviews included five &#13;
sub-village chairpersons and four health staff from the primary health centres &#13;
within the study area. Data were examined and subjected to statistical tests, &#13;
mainly chi-square (P≥ 0.05. The findings of the study revealed that most of the &#13;
respondents within the study area were highly influenced by financial capability, &#13;
belief in a particular disease (nature of the disease), education level, and &#13;
availability of health facilities. These were the influencing factors concerning the &#13;
decision taken at the household level when a person falls ill. Variations among &#13;
locals in coastal communities based on the mentioned forces. This study, among &#13;
others, recommends that locals within the study area should use the available &#13;
health services once they become ill. The decision about health care should be &#13;
made by understanding illness, seriousness, and financial capacity for the health &#13;
and productive community.

<title>Benefits and Challenges of Social Media Usage among Youth in Higher Learning Institutions: A Case of the Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial Academy</title>

<description>Benefits and Challenges of Social Media Usage among Youth in Higher Learning Institutions: A Case of the Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial Academy
Mbwete, Rose
This paper looks into the benefits and drawbacks of social media usage among &#13;
students in higher education. The study intends to learn about the advantages and &#13;
disadvantages the youth face when using social media. Students were chosen at &#13;
random from the Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial Academy (MNMA) Karume Campus, &#13;
Zanzibar for the study. Administrative and academic staffs, as well as student &#13;
leaders, were key informants. A questionnaire and an interview guide were used &#13;
to collect data. The Chi-square test was used to analyse the quantitative data (P &#13;
0.05). Communication, business, and academic themes emerged from qualitative &#13;
data on social media use. The findings showed that the majority of students owned &#13;
mobile phones with internet connectivity and were familiar with social media sites. &#13;
Students at the Karume Campus use mobile phones to access social media sites &#13;
for one to five hours per day, resulting in lost time. Social media use among &#13;
students in higher education institutions has both positive and negative &#13;
consequences, which include moral decay, wastage of time, unplanned financial &#13;
expenditure and addiction. Searching for academic resources, health-related &#13;
information, communication, and business transactions are all benefits of using &#13;
social media among the youth. The study recommends that students who use &#13;
mobile phones should spend time searching for academic materials or engaging in &#13;
social communication with discipline. The MNMA administration, through the Dean &#13;
of Students Office, should counsel students on the importance of using social &#13;
media responsibly.

<title>Strengthening Institutional Dynamics to Mitigate Rapes among Women and Children in Zanzibar Tanzania</title>
<link>http://41.59.91.195:9090/handle/123456789/180</link>
<description>Strengthening Institutional Dynamics to Mitigate Rapes among Women and Children in Zanzibar Tanzania
Babune, George; Mbarouk, Saleh
Rape is both a human rights and health issue of concern among development actors at &#13;
local, national, regional and global, levels. The paper examined the existing institutional &#13;
dynamics in mitigating rape among children and women in Zanzibar. A case study &#13;
design was used with a mixed-methods approach. The sampling procedures involved &#13;
purposive and simple random sampling methods. The questionnaire survey, key &#13;
informant interview and focus group discussion methods were used to collect data. &#13;
Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis informed semi-quantitative and qualitative &#13;
data analysis respectively. The findings revealed that rape is persistently a major issue &#13;
affecting the community members including women and children in the study area. The &#13;
factors contributing to rape include traditional beliefs, economic reasons, immorality &#13;
and modernity. The findings revealed further that social and government institutional &#13;
dynamics in mitigating rape mixed responses against rape from religious institutions &#13;
holding a higher level of responses (4 levels) followed by Shehia, District and family &#13;
scoring a moderate level (3 levels) of practices. The study concluded that rape among &#13;
women and children are influenced by underlying factors including poor mitigating &#13;
measures against rape among the relevant social and government institutions. The &#13;
paper recommends for the adoption of proactive approach and results-oriented &#13;
response to mitigating rape at an institutional level. This would involve the creation of &#13;
a synergy between family members, government agencies and religious on planning, &#13;
intervening, monitoring and reporting rape issues.
